Description
When you start seeing oil spots under your tractor, chances are your rear main seal has given up the ghost. This rope-type seal keeps engine oil from leaking out the back of your crankshaft into the clutch housing, where it can contaminate your clutch disc and cause expensive problems. These rope seals were the standard sealing method on older Massey Ferguson engines before modern lip seals came along.
What You’re Getting
- Traditional rope-style seal material that works just like your original
- Set of two seals – you need both halves to do the job right
- Quality seal material that won’t break down from hot oil exposure
- Direct replacement for early Massey Ferguson engines prior to certain serial numbers
- Proven sealing method that’s been keeping oil in engines for decades
Built for Real Farm Work
This seal fits older Massey Ferguson engines that were designed with rope-type rear main seals from the factory. The improved seal technology provides superior sealing performance compared to traditional rope seals, effectively preventing oil leaks from the rear crankshaft into the clutch housing area. These engines are found in classic tractors that are still earning their keep on farms everywhere.
Made to Last
Rope seals work differently than modern lip seals – they rely on proper compression and a tight fit between the crankshaft and seal groove to stop leaks. When installed correctly, they create a reliable barrier that keeps oil where it belongs while allowing the crankshaft to turn freely.
Good to Know
Installing a rope seal takes patience and the right technique. The engine needs to come apart enough to access the rear main bearing cap, and the old seal material must be completely cleaned out. Some mechanics soak new rope seals in oil before installation to help them conform to the crankshaft. While you’re under there, check other common leak points like the timing cover and rear main seal.
