Description
Ever notice your fan either roaring like a jet engine all day long or barely spinning when you’re working the tractor hard and temps start climbing? That’s your viscous fan clutch giving up the ghost. This smart little component is what controls when your cooling fan spins and when it takes a break, automatically adjusting based on engine temperature to save you fuel and spare your ears.
What You’re Getting
- Temperature-controlled silicone fluid coupling that knows exactly when to engage
- Saves you 15-20 horsepower during light work when cooling isn’t critical
- Dramatically quieter operation – no more constant fan roar during transport
- Progressive engagement that’s easier on belts and bearings than on-off systems
- Sealed, maintenance-free design built for thousands of operating hours
Built for Modern High-Tech Farming
Your R series or M series John Deere isn’t just any tractor – these machines represent some of the most advanced technology in agriculture today. Whether you’re precision planting with GPS guidance or running a high-capacity baler, these tractors generate serious horsepower. This viscous clutch ensures you’re not wasting power spinning a fan at full speed when you’re cruising between fields, but delivers maximum cooling when you’re pulling heavy implements in hot weather.
Made to Last
The specialized silicone fluid inside changes thickness based on temperature, creating a purely mechanical solution that needs no electronics or sensors. The bi-metallic coil senses actual air temperature coming off the radiator, while heavy-duty bearings handle the side loads from large cooling fans. It’s precision-engineered to provide smooth, progressive engagement that protects your entire cooling system.
Installation Notes
Let that engine cool completely before you start – these clutches get extremely hot during operation. The clutch mounts directly to your water pump shaft, so it’s a good time to check that bearing for any play. Keep the new clutch upright during installation – never lay it on its side or the silicone fluid can migrate and mess up the calibration. Don’t overtorque the mounting nut or you’ll damage your water pump. New clutches may take a few heat cycles to reach full operating characteristics.
